Wellbeing Support

Werrington Primary School offers support to all of our pupils and their families. Support can take many forms and vary in duration and type, dependent upon the needs of the child. Below is just an overview of some of the interventions that we use to support our children and their families.

Emotional Literacy – Introduces children to the ‘Monsters Monster.’ This sequence of interventions investigates feelings and emotions, considering in greater depth our core emotions, what triggers different emotions and how these affect our mind and bodies. Having a greater understanding of emotional intelligence is essential to building a balanced life.

Social Skills – Through a variety of games and activities children improve the many different aspects of social skills, for example, listening, speaking and thinking, working together and thinking of others.

Friendship – This series of interventions looks at what makes a good friend, the importance of comprise, co-operation, empathy, understanding and kindness.

Self -Esteem – During this intervention we aim to improve children’s overall evaluation of themselves. We explore core beliefs and conditions of worth, improving self- esteem and increasing confidence and resilience.

Self –Regulation – (managing strong emotions) We help children gain the ability to tolerate sensations, situations and distress; offering support in developing appropriate responses to strong emotions and supporting children to find individual strategies to manage their emotions.

Empathy – Whilst developing the skill of empathy we create a lap-book of tools and gained knowledge. We cultivate the skills associated with positive relationships, such as, reading body language, prospective, kindness, listening and investigating different scenarios to demonstrate how these new skills can be put in to practice.

Bereavement – Using the beautiful story, Saying Goodbye to Hare, children are supported through grief. The story and associated workbook support children in the understanding of death and grief.

Concentration – Through a series of games and activities, children combine the skills of listening, looking, speaking and thinking to further enhance and encourage concentration and improving their working and visual memory. The focus is centred on paying attention in order to participate successfully in all aspects of life.

Executive Functions – These are made up of a set of cognitive processes that are essential for the attainment of our chosen task or goal. These functions include; task initiative, planning, organisation, time management, working memory, attention, self-control, meta-cognition, flexibility and perseverance. We look at each aspect of executive functioning, mastering each skill. We show our understanding by linking executive functioning to various activities, we have even used these skills to make cakes!

Thought- Feeling Behaviour Cycle– A CBT intervention investigating how our thoughts initiate feelings and how these thoughts and feelings can then effect our behaviour. We then use this knowledge to challenge our thoughts to break the cycle, improve our behaviour and correct cognitive distortion.

Mindfulness – Mindfulness means knowing directly what is going on inside and outside of ourselves, moment by moment. It includes the importance of having an awareness of our thoughts and feelings as they happen. Mindfulness can help us to enjoy the world around us more and have a better understanding of ourselves. This intervention teaches children to take notice on how to self- regulate and stay grounded through developing understanding and mindfulness practice.

Lego Therapy – Lego therapy aims to develop social competence through the development of social skills. Collaborative play provides the opportunity for children to practice skills such as: turn-taking, listening, sharing ideas, communication, comprise, problem solving and shared attention.

Worry and Anxiety – When worry and anxiety effect our everyday life it is important for early intervention. We unpick worry and how it effects our body and mind. We take back control by acknowledging how we are feeling, what is making us feel that way, how intense the worry is, what kind of worry it is and how we choose to respond to the worry.

Positive Psychology – Encourages children to gain and develop a greater understanding of their, thoughts, feelings and behaviour with a focus on strengths instead of weakness, building on the positives in life instead of repairing the bad. We focus on the PERMA model:

P- Positive emotions
E -Engagement
R- Relationships
M- Meaning
A- Accomplishment

Each area is investigated in order to help the child apply the model and have the knowledge to use PERMA in their daily lives.

We also have a counsellor from Younger Minds for the children that need a more specialised nature of support.
